When I am not busy with my studies, I spend a lot of my
spare time doing communication policy outreach and
advocacy.
For instance, I founded the blog Shouting Loudly, a source
for news and opinion on topics such as media policy, the
media industry, and media representations of social and
political issues. Fellow Annenberg students Jason Tocci and Lokman Tsui have joined me in this
effort.
I also seek to reach out to a larger audience than those
who read our blog. I wrote an opinion piece for the
Philadelphia Indymedia
Center calling for a federal policy of network
neutrality; the article was reprinted in the
Indypendent,
a New York City newspaper. I published letters in Macworld and MacAddict warning about the
dangers of
trusted computing.
Further, I participate in the policy making process
directly. This year, I submitted a reply
comment as part of a triennial rulemaking
held by the US
Copyright Office to determine exemptions to Section
1201(a)(1) of the Digital
Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). I also
testified at a later stage of the same rulemaking.
In 2006, I was an intern at Public Knowledge, "a
Washington, DC based advocacy group working to defend your
rights in the emerging digital culture." I still
occasionally write for the PK
blog.
